National Club Survey on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Skating

Two national research surveys on equity, diversity, and inclusion experiences in skating are being undertaken by lead researcher Dr. Tina Chen (Distinguished Professor, University of Manitoba), with research support by the Centre for Social Sciences Research and Policy at the University of Manitoba.

The purpose of the surveys is:

  • to document the experiences of all skaters 14 years of age and older about the equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) climate within Skate Canada clubs and events.
  • to learn what coaches and skating clubs are doing to promote a safe, diverse, and inclusive environment for their skaters.

The information will be used to learn how to make the skating environment more respectful for all participants, and to better provide a skating environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Participation in the survey will be voluntary and anonymous, with all data stored confidentially by the Centre for Social Sciences Research and Policy. Only aggregate data will be available to Skate Canada. Results of the surveys will be released through final reports to be posted to Skate Canada’s website, and through media releases, invited presentations, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed publications.

Skate Canada intends to use the results of this research to inform initiatives and organizational priorities, as well as to respond to recommendations associated with the summary report.

The research surveys have been approved by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba (Protocol #HS24785). If you have any concerns or complaints about this project, you may contact the lead researcher ([email protected]; 204-474-9149) or the Human Ethics Coordinator at 204-474-7122 or by email at: [email protected].
